GOLD BEACH, Ore. -- Authorities say a 49-year-old Brookings man has been arrested on charges of neglecting horses so hungry they ate the bark off nearby trees.
The Curry County sheriff's department says 10 horses were left in small pens for nearly three months with no regular supply of food and water. They were reported living in thick mud and feces and in need of veterinary care.
A resident reported the horses to authorities. The World of Coos Bay reports that Curry County sheriff's deputies arrested Michael Ray Perry on Monday, filing charges of animal neglect.
