BOISE -- Ada County Coroner Erwin Sonnenberg now says a Boise woman found dead in a canal was likely dead before the canal filled with water.

The body of 40-year-old Alexis Palmer of Boise was found last Thursday behind a church near State Street and Collister Drive around 9 a.m.

After performing an autopsy, Sonnenberg now says he believes Palmer did not drown as previously thought, and says her body was likely in the canal when it began filling up with water.

The coroner says positive identification was confirmed late Friday through fingerprints. Family members were located and notified over the weekend.

Sonnenberg has ordered toxicology tests but says it could take around six weeks to receive results to determine her cause of death.

Authorities are still looking for people who last saw Palmer alive.

The case remains under investigation.
