CALDWELL -- Firefighters rushed into a burning home to save an elderly couple and three dogs late Tuesday night.

Crews from Caldwell and Middleton responded to the fire at 203 Elm Street just after 11:30 p.m.

Firefighters reported flames and smoke coming from a bedroom. That's when they spotted a woman in the doorway. She yelled that her husband was still inside the flaming structure.

The crews, then -- without hand-lines or anything, entered the structure and rescued the elderly gentleman from the front living room area of the house, said Caldwell Fire Battalion Chief Tim Scott.

The couple was taken to a nearby hospital by local paramedics. A firefighter on scene told us the man who was rescued suffered serious injuries. He was later transferred to Saint Alphonsus in Boise.

The woman was treated and released from the hospital.

Firefighters also rescued three dogs from the home and gave them rescue oxygen. We're told a neighbor is taking care of them.

Chief Scott says the fire started in the bedroom, and was likely an accident.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
