IDAHO FALLS -- The U.S. Department of Energy has fined Battelle Energy Alliance more than $400,000 for violations that occurred at the Idaho National Laboratory.

The DOE notified Battelle of the $412,500 penalty Thursday in a letter to lab director John Grossenbacher. Battelle is the company contracted to run the research and lab facilities at INL in Idaho Falls.

The DOE cited violations of quality assurance requirements and occupational radiation protection.

INL spokesman Ethan Huffman told the Post-Register there is no plan to appeal the decision. Huffman also said the fine will be paid from Battelle corporate funds rather than taxpayer dollars.
