BOISE -- State prison officials have transferred another 120 inmates to a Colorado lockup to help ease the pressure on Idaho's prisons and jails.

The inmates were bused in groups over the past two weeks to the Kit Carson Correctional Center in Burlington, Colo.

With the transfer, the state Department of Correction says 250 of Idaho's prisoners are now being incarcerated at the medium-security prison in Colorado. The lockup is owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America.

Idaho's inmate population reached more than 8,000 for the first time in April.

While the state's correction department has been renting beds in county jails to accommodate the demand, agency director Brent Reinke has said there's simply not enough room.
