HILLSBORO, Ore. - A Hillsboro school bus and a construction crane collided Thursday morning, and the driver of the bus was injured.

The construction crane was being transported by a flatbed semi-truck. Police think the arm of the crane swung from the truck and smashed into the oncoming bus.

There were no children on the bus because they had just been dropped off at Liberty High School. The driver suffered rib and shoulder injuries, authorities said.

The crash happened at the corner of Northwest Glencoe Road and Northwest Evergreen Road around 8:30 a.m, said Beth Graser with the Hillsboro School District.

When firefighters arrived, they found the tip of the crane embedded in the front driver's side and the bus tilted 30 degrees on two wheels.

The bus doors would not open but bystanders entered through emergency exits to help the driver, said Storm Smith with Hillsboro Fire and Rescue.

The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening after rescuers removed the bus doors, Smith said.
