BOISE -- A toddler who police say suffered head trauma at the hands of her mother's boyfriend remains in critical condition at a Boise hospital.

Ada County Jail records show 21-year-old Jordan Everhart made an initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon on a felony charge of injury to a child. He is being held on a $500,000 bond after his arrest over the weekend.

Emergency workers were called to a Boise home Saturday after a 18-month-old girl in Everhart's care was reported unconscious.

Paramedics reported that they called law enforcement after determining the child had suffered head trauma.

An emergency room doctor said a CT scan of the girl show new and old bleeding. She had external bleeding and internal bleeding in her brain.

Police say Everhart was babysitting the girl and his explanation for how she was hurt did not match up with the injuries. He claims a dog knocked over the girl, but police only found two 20-pound puppies in the residence.

Everhart is due back in court on Oct. 25 for a preliminary hearing.
