BOISE -- A Boise woman has been charged with murder in the death of a toddler who called her grandma.

But the father of the 2-year-old boy who died in December is defending Katherine Stanfield, saying the child had medical problems.

Police said Tuesday the 57-year-old Stanfield was indicted by a grand jury and arrested on a charge of first-degree murder. She had the charges against her read aloud in an Ada County courtroom Wednesday. The judge set bond at $250,000 and appointed Stanfield a public defender.

The child, identified by family as Wyatt Fesler, died of blunt-force trauma on Dec. 11, 2009, according to the Ada County coroner.

Police say the child's injuries led to an investigation and the arrest.

The child's father, Lance Fesler, and his fiancee, Stacie Duval, say Stanfield is innocent. Duval is Stanfield's daughter, and she says Wyatt called Stanfield grandma.

Duval says Wyatt was prone to breath-holding and fainting spells.
