GARDENCITY-- Dozens of jockeys and hundreds of horse owners are getting ready for the 2014 season at Les Bois Park. The first races of the season begin on Saturday, May 3.

That includes noted owner and trainer Paul Treasure who boards and races a total of 28 horses at Les Bois. Treasure's horses include the talented Paris in April, a young mare that earned this horseman from Hammett more than $70,000 in 2013.

A lot of these we raise, and from the time they're baby colts, we raise them, and you got a lot invested and hopefully you get a return on your money, Treasure told KTVB.

The majority of race horses like Treasure's arrived in March and have been undergoing several weeks of training to morph into race shape.

NEWCHANGESFOR2014

Likewise, the Les Bois grounds have been transformed for 2014 as well. The dirt track has undergone its annual resurfacing, the upscale Turf Club continues to undergo renovation, and more video screens have been installed throughout the facility for viewing and betting on remote races. A new track side pub under the grandstands has also been completed.

There is a lot of activity at the track right now, said race secretary Shorty Martin. We've got a lot of training going on. We've got some remodeling going on. We've getting the monitors set up inside here to watch the Kentucky Derby live.

Note:Legendary Boise jockey Gary Stevens is expected to be among those racing in the Kentucky Derby. However, the field of jockeys has not been finalized.

The 2014 Racing season begins on Saturday, May 3, with a total of 10 races held from 12 p.m. through approximately 7 p.m.

Fans who show up can watch and bet on the world-famous Kentucky Derby shown live on the racetrack's video screens. That means approximately seven hours of horse racing to kick off the 2014 season.

The track has seen it's fair share of ups and downs, sitting empty for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

However, 2014 promises a total of 30 racing days, along with an increase in American Quarter-horse Association Challenges. The popular Wednesday ladies night will also continue.
