BOISE -- Young girls from around the community got an engineering class of their very own at the Discovery Center of Idaho.

It was all a part of GEMSET, or Girls Exploring Math, Science, Engineering and Technology.

The youngsters got a chance to learn about physics with hands-on activities including polymers, liquid nitrogen, water rockets, and more.

They also studied the work of female scientists and heard from local women in the fields of engineering and science.

Shelley Best, an educator at the Discovery Center of Idaho, says a lower percentage of girls go into STEM careers, but hopes days like today can help turn that around.

To see them walk away with so much more knowledge than they came in with, is huge to me. I just think it's a fantastic thing that the Discovery Center provides for this community, a life-long interest in learning, especially in the STEM fields, said Best.

The class was sponsored in part by the Soroptimist International of Boise.
