MERIDIAN -- Authorities have identified the driver in a tragic rollover that happened near Interstate 84 and the Ten Mile Road overpass Tuesday.

Forty-nine-year-old Matthew James Stapleton of Nampa died of blunt force trauma after the crash. The Ada County Coroner's Office pronounced Stapleton dead at a local hospital.

His mother, Betty Jean Stapleton, 83, of Nampa, also died in the crash. Blunt force trauma is also listed as the cause of her death.

Idaho State Police say the crash was reported around 12:15 p.m.

Investigators say a 1986 Toyota 4-Runner was eastbound on the off-ramp when the truck failed to stop at the intersection with Ten Mile Road. The vehicle crossed all lanes of traffic on Ten Mile Road and went off the eastbound on-ramp. It launched about 20 to 30 yards down a steep hillside and landed on its top.

Both occupants were wearing seatbelts.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
