AUMSVILLE, Ore. -- A metal theft suspect was arrested and two got away after a stolen truck got stuck in a ditch near Aumsville, police said.
Deputies were called to the report of a theft Tuesday morning at a metal salvage business in the 9000 block of Silver Falls Highway SE, near Aumsville.
The caller reported someone had broken into the business offices and stolen several items, and added that a truck and trailer were also missing, according to Don Thomson of the Marion County Sheriff's Office. Soon afterward the employees spotted the stolen vehicles stuck near railroad tracks about 500 yards away.
The truck and trailer were loaded with stolen generators, welders and other industrial equipment, along with scrap metal that had been collected for recycling. Three people were seen trying to free the truck, but they ran into the woods when they saw the employees, Thomson said.
Deputies called in a K-9 unit to assist in the search and one suspect, 34-year-old Jeremy Daniel Harris, was found hiding in bushes nearby. He was treated at a nearby hospital for dog bites suffered during his arrest. He was then jailed on charges of burglary and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
Two men were still on the loose, Thomson said. Anyone with information on the suspects was asked to leave an anonymous tip at (503) 540- 8079 or send and email to Detective Kimberly Thomas.
