MERIDIAN -- Four horses died Monday afternoon in a barn fire in Meridian.

It started at about 4:15 p.m. on McDermott Road just south of Highway 20/26.

The barn and the attached shed were in flames when Meridian firefighters arrived.

Deputy Fire Chief Perry Palmer says they quickly knocked the fire down.

We did have a little larger than normal response, just because of the heat of the day. We needed to rotate the firefighters, keep 'em hydrated, and keep 'em from being overworked, said Palmer.

Along with the four horses that died, the barn is a total loss.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
