BANNOCK COUNTY - Several people were hospitalized after three separate drivers slammed into a pair of moose in the roadway late Thursday night.

The drivers were all headed north on Interstate 15 in Bannock County at about 11:20 p.m. when the wrecks happened.

Idaho State Police say the first to collide with the animals was 26-year-old Tyler Winiecke of Provo, Utah. Moments later, 20-year-old Rebecca Richins of Rigby hit a second moose, and 27-year-old Stephen Chamberlain of Salt Lake City, Utah slammed into the carcass of one of the moose, which was still lying across the highway.

Winiecke and his passenger, 24-year-old Sarah Winiecke of Provo, were injured in the collision, as were Richins and her passenger, 21-year-old Daniel Richins of Rigby. All four were taken by ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello.

All the occupants were wearing seatbelts when the wrecks happened, police say. One northbound lane and one southbound lane was blocked for about three hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
