MERIDIAN On this day before the first official day of summer, children took to the water in big numbers.
Forty-five kids showed up today at Roaring Springs Waterpark in Meridian -- one of hundreds of sites around the world taking part in the World s Largest Swimming Lesson.
The aim of the World's Largest Swimming Lesson is to spread the message that swimming lessons save lives from drowning, which is the second leading cause of accidental death in children 14 and younger.
If a child doesn't learn to swim by the third grade, they likely never will, so it's so important for kids and adults as well to get involved in swimming lessons, said Roaring Springs spokesperson Tiffany Quilici.
The Guinness record for the World's Largest Swimming Lesson was set last year with 32,450 participants at different pools around the globe.
It will take several months for Guinness to tally today's numbers.
