BOISE -- Private prison operator Corrections Corporation of America will pay $1 million to the Idaho Department of Correction after the company's employees falsified staffing records.

The agreement was announced Tuesday.

Prison officials say the sum doesn't reflect actual hours, but was determined to reasonably cover costs related to the staffing misrepresentations at the Idaho Correctional Center.

CCA acknowledged it falsified reports to the state showing more than 4,800 hours of guard posts were filled when they were actually left unstaffed.

CCA officials have said they'd make taxpayers whole for unverified hours.

But Idaho has decided to take over the privately run prison, staffing it with state workers instead after the falsified records, allegations of mismanagement and rampant violence.

Additionally, IDOC said Tuesday it also denied the company a $350,000 payment.
