BOISE -- Local law enforcement officers hosted a special party Monday night for about 70 kids.

It was the annual Bigs in Blue Christmas party at Dave and Busters in Meridian.

About 30 volunteers from the Boise Police Department and Ada County Sheriff's Office spent the evening playing games with the kids, some of whom are from local refugee families.

The Bigs in Blue program was designed with the goal of encouraging positive contact between police and children.

What we try to do is, make this a proactive event, where they can see that we're human too, that we just want to come out and have fun. You know, when they run into a police officer on the street, it's not all about officers being bad and wanting to get them in trouble, it's about officers being their friends. said Boise Police Officer Jermaine Galloway.

This is the 12th year for the Bigs in Blue program in Boise.
