SEATTLE -- Seven Olympia teenagers were hurt when the car they were riding in slid off the road and struck a pillar on Interstate 5 in Pierce County.

According to a Washington State Patrol report, a 16-year-old Olympia girl was driving a Volkswagen Jetta southbound on I-5 just near Center Drive just after 12 a.m. Saturday when she hit the brakes and slid into the grass median. The car then hit a pillar broadside, causing the engine to separate from the vehicle and land in the road.

There were six passengers in the car. Two 17-year-old girls, two 15-year-old girls, a 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy. Six of the teens were taken to local hospitals.

The State Patrol said the crash was caused by driver inattention. The girl could face a negligent driving charge.
