ONTARIO -- A 20-year-old woman was hit and killed by a semi-truck at around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Oregon State Police say Veneza Rodriguez, of Ontario, was heading eastbound on U.S. Route 20. While making a left turn onto Highway 201 near the Cairo Junction, she drove directly into the path of a semi-truck traveling southbound.
Police say both vehicles traveled together about 200-yards before separating after impact.
Rodriguez died at the scene and her 2006 Pontiac G6 landed in a shallow irrigation ditch.
OSP is investigating the cause of the crash, but investigators believe that cell phone usage by Rodriguez may be a contributing factor. She was wearing a seat belt at the time.
Guadalupe Rios, a 53-year-old Nyssa man, was driving the semi-truck involved in the accident. He was not injured.
Malheur County Sheriff's Office, Bureau of Land Management, Ontario Fire & Rescue, and Oregon Department of Transportation all assisted OSP on the scene. U.S. Route 20 was closed for around six hours.
