EMMETT -- Firefighters responded to a three-alarm house fire near East 7th Avenue and Johns Avenue in Emmett around 9:00 Friday night.

Officials say a family of eight was inside the house when the fire started in the attic.

The homeowner says they had smelled plastic burning, and went to check it out. That is when they saw a lot of smoke and called 911.

When firefighters first got on scene, they went into a defensive mode to protect neighboring homes, then began to attack the fire.

The homeowner says they did not have homeowners insurance and will be staying with other family members.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crews from Star, Eagle, Emmett, and Gem County responded to the fire.
