VANCOUVER -- Police called in firefighters to help end a six-hour standoff in Vancouver with a woman armed with a hammer and hatchet.

Raw: Woman with hatchet

Officers responded Sunday afternoon to a report the woman was destroying property and had climbed onto the balcony outside her apartment.

She refused to talk with negotiators and climbed to another balcony. Residents were evacuated.

Police say a fire truck placed a ladder against the building to trap the woman so she could be pulled over the railing to safety.

The 58-year-old woman was not injured. She was taken to a hospital for an evaluation.
