BOISE -- Senator John McGee, the Majority Caucus Chair in the Idaho Statehouse, was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with grand theft and driving under the influence.

Ada County Sheriff's Deputies said it all beganSaturday night when McGee started drinking at a golf course at about 10.

They said he later left the clubhouse on foot.

I was awakened by the sound of my kids screaming that there was somebody out in the backyard, said JoeCarleton.

Carleton woke up around 3 a.m. Sunday to find a truck and 20-foot travel trailer belonging to his neighbors jack-knifed in his back driveway.

Apparently the driver, who deputies say was Senator John McGee, was trying to turn the rig around. Carleton's sons then said the driver ran around the house and up and down the gravel road. Carleton found him in the back seat.

He said he was looking for the promised land, Carleton said. He didn't know where he was at. He was dazed and confused. He was in another world.

Carletoncalled police.

Sean and Laurie Marron were woken up by responding officers.

(The officer)said our Excursion and trailer was two houses down at our neighbors, said Sean Marron. I said, 'What?' Then I woke up my wife and she freaked out.

I'm like, 'He's joking, he has to be joking,' said Laurie Marron.

No, I wasn't joking, Sean Marron said.

They had left the truck unlocked with the keys inside.

We're trying to go down there, and the police are saying, 'No, no, no,' said Sean Marron. I'm like, 'who is it? Is it a crackhead?' He's like, 'No, it's an outstanding citizen.'

These neighbors soon learned thatthat outstanding citizen, according to deputies, wasMcGee.

I was in shock at the credentials that he has, and to make a choice like that, said Laurie Marron.

I thought he was kidding when he told me his name, said Joe Carleton. I really did. I thought he was joking. He was bleeding, he had cuts all over his legs. He was barefoot. He looked like he had been in a wrestling match.

But after deputies said McGee walked miles in bare feet, stole a truck and trailer, got it stuck, and was arrested, the neighbors say it could've turned out worse if he had turned on to a major road, instead of a driveway.

It could've been 100 times worse, said Laurie Marron.

McGee was booked into the Ada County jail at about 4:27Sunday morning.

He is expected to be arraigned Mondayafternoon.

Deputies said his blood-alcohol-level was 0.15 on the breath test, which is almost twice the legal driving limit.
