BOISE -- Nearly 12,000 acres of public land north of Mountain Home is now off-limits to motorized vehicles because of a wildfire that burned in the area last summer.

The Stout Fire burned thousands of acres northeast of Mountain Home last July in land managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

The BLM told us the ban on motorized vehicles there could last for up to two years.

The idea is to allow native plants time to recover, and to prevent erosion and the growth of invasive weeds.

Closure signs will be posted at key entry points.
