PORTLAND - A man was able to pull a car's pinned driver from the wreckage as a semi overturned on Portland s Marquam Bridge Tuesday.

Mark Cole was driving a rear steering unit of the extra-long trailer semi when it crashed, and rolled over.

The semi had dumped its load, a 170-foot, 75,000-lb. steel I-beam covered in concrete, on top of a Volkswagen, crushing the car. Both the semi truck and the car burst into flames.

Cole crawled out of his end of the rig.

I looked over the beam and there's a young woman sitting in there and she's screaming and scared obviously, Cole told KGW. I kind of straddled the window and pulled her out and I carried her across the road.

He ripped away portion of his t-shirt as a bandage for the woman's hand. She was bleeding from a cut about the size of quarter, but otherwise seemed okay, Cole said.
