BOISE The Ada County coroner has released the name of a man who took his own life after a standoff in a Meridian neighborhood Monday morning that lasted more than five hours.

Coroner Erwin Sonnenberg says 33-year-old Johnny Austin died of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Meridian Police were attempting to serve a felony warrant at a home near the 1000 block of East Chateau Drive when Austin pointed a shotgun at a police officer, and a standoff ensued.

Several nearby homes were evacuated and students at Chief Joseph Elementary School were kept behind locked doors as a safety precaution during the standoff.

At one point during the standoff, Austin fired a gunshot inside the home. Police communicated with him via robot, but that did not stop him from turning the gun on himself.

Austin was wanted for failure to appear on drug charges.
