MARSING, Idaho -- Authorities say a southwestern Idaho man charged with helping steal $162,000 in cash and gold from the home of an alleged mobster died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Owyhee County deputies found Kelly Verceles' body in the Marsing home of alleged mobster Enrico Ponzo on Feb. 1.

The 40-year-old Verceles was taking care of the home while Ponzo awaited trial on federal charges for his alleged involvement with the Mafia. He had been living in Idaho under an assumed name.

Coroner Harvey Grimme told the Idaho Press-Tribune that he completed a toxicology report and a psychological profile before ruling Verceles' death a suicide.

Verceles had been scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court on Feb. 10 for a change-of-plea hearing on conspiracy, burglary and grand theft charges.
