NAMPA -- Police are hunting for a Nampa man who led police on a high-speed chase Wednesday afternoon.

The chase began around 1:22 p.m. after an officer with the Nampa Police Department pulled over a red Honda Accord in the 1200 block of West Orchard Street.

After pulling to the side of the road, the woman driving the Honda got out of the car and ran away, police said. That s when the officer spotted 29-year-old Vincente Prieto laying down in the back seat.

The officer backed away from the car after seeing Prieto making furtive movements, and the suspect jumped into the driver s seat and took off, police said.

Police say Prieto sped westbound on Lonestar Road with officers in pursuit. Police called off the chase near the intersection of Midway Road and Lake Lowell Avenue over concerns about the suspect s high speed and erratic driving.

Sgt. Joe Ramirez said that s standard procedure when a chase threatens to become a danger to the public. He said officers and their supervisors weigh factors like speed, time of day and traffic conditions when deciding whether to abandon a chase.

Anytime it becomes more risk than benefit, we call the pursuit off, Ramirez said.

Shortly after the officers pulled back, Prieto turned east on Lake Lowell Avenue, running a stop sign and sideswiping another car at Middleton Road. No one was injured in the crash.

Despite not being able to catch up to suspect, officers identified him as Prieto, who has multiple warrants for theft, trespassing, resisting arrest and traffic violations. Police say he was involved in a similar car chase in February.

The woman who ran from the car was identified as 34-year-old Brandi Davis of Jerome. She was found just minutes after leaving the car and arrested on a drug warrant from Twin Falls County. Ramirez said investigators are working to determine what her role in the chase was.

Anyone with information on Vincent Prieto s whereabouts is urged to contact Nampa Police at 465-2257 or Crime Stoppers at 343-COPS.
