MERIDIAN There s a traffic alert for people driving through downtown Meridian.

The Ada County Highway District says a nine-day closure of the intersection of Meridian Road and Pine Avenue will begin Friday and continue through spring break.

Crews will be installing a new storm drain and irrigation crossings. At the same time, utility companies will be doing some work, a new road base will be built and a portion of the intersection will be paved.

Officials say closing the intersection will allow crews to complete their work faster, plus make it safer for them during this phase of the construction.

The closure is expected to start at 8 p.m. Friday, March 22, and continue until the early morning commute on Monday, April 1. Construction work will only be done during the daytime hours.

During the closure traffic will be detoured to Franklin Road. People can access businesses near the intersection by using Broadway Avenue to Northwest 1st Street.

A map of business construction accesses is available at meridiansplitcorridor.org.

Once the intersection reopens, no additional closures of Pine Avenue are expected.

The Meridian Split Corridor project began in late October 2012 and is scheduled for completion in mid-October 2013, but it could open sooner.

The project includes constructing a cross-over roadway connecting Main Street to Meridian Road north of Franklin Road and south of the railroad crossing, widening Meridian Road to five lanes, and rebuilding the intersections of Main/Fairview and Meridian/Cherry.
