MOUNTAIN HOME -- The man accused of killing his girlfriend and her two young sons nine years ago, then fleeing the country, is now on trial in Elmore County. Opening statements started this morning.

Jorge Alberto Lopez-Orozco is accused of three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Rebecca Ramirez and her two sons, who were two and four years old.

Their bodies were found in a burned-out car in the summer of 2002, outside of Mountain Home.

Prosecutors say Lopez-Orozco fled to Mexico after the killings.

He was captured in 2009, and returned to Idaho in March.

As part of the negotiations in bringing Orozco back from Mexico, the Elmore County prosecutor agreed to not seek the death penalty.

The trial is expected to last six weeks.
