MOUNTAINHOME - Millions of dollars of construction will soon take place on the Mountain Home Air Force Base. Sixty new homes, plus other facilities are set to be built on the base. This could create a lot of jobs in the area.

The land where they plan to build new homes, used to have older homes on it.

It was from the 1950's and we have just finished demolishing all the housing in this area. So we used to have hundreds of homes in this area, but they dated back to the 50's and 60's, said Lieutenant Colonel Mike Holliday.

Mountain Home Air Force Base has a plan to build brand new houses on this space. They are getting bids from private companies across the country. That part of the project is being handled by an Air Force division in San Antonio. This is part of a wider privatization project.

We partner with a private company, private housing developer and they take over ownership of our family housing units, said Lt. Col. Holliday. Initial construction is going to be in the multi-million dollar range. Somewhere $5 to $10 million for the construction of the new homes, the community center and the sports fields.

The private company that gets the contract will maintain and improve the housing, perform daily maintenance, and construct new houses as needed. This will create about 20 new jobs.

When the firm comes here, we obviously try to encourage them to look at some of our local economy and local people to work on those jobs as much as possible, said Lt. Col. Holliday.

But it's the company's choice where they get the workers.

Demolition is also part of the contract. When all is said and done, they will tear down 370 homes.

Officials hope the contract will be awarded this August. They couldn't say when the building process will start. The whole project is said to take no more than six years.
