LOS ANGELES -- New details have emerged in the weekend shooting death of University of Idaho wide receiver Ken McRoyal.

Los Angeles Police Sgt. Kristin Haggerty says McRoyal was shot in the upper body following some kind of verbal altercation around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The incident happened outside of a party at the in the Lincoln Heights area of Los Angeles.

McRoyal walked on to the University of Idaho football team after transferring from El Camino Junior College. He caught six passes for 35 yards for the Vandals last season. He played good enough to earn a scholarship for the 2012 season.

"It’s a devastating loss,” coach Robb Akey said. “We’ve lost a brother, a teammate, a family member.  But, more importantly, a momma lost her son today."

McRoyal was originally from New Orleans, but his family moved to California after Hurricane Katrina. He became a father three years ago.

Idaho quarterback Dominique Blackman was McRoyal's cousin, teammate and friend:

“They took somebody who meant a lot to our family and not only to our family but to a lot, to college football, to this community. He’s a Katrina survivor. He’s bigger than that, he’s a father, my friend.”

Blackman is the last person to communicate with McRoyal before his death.

“I was the last person he talked to…telling me where he’s at and saying to come to Hollywood, but I wasn’t there for him. I told him I couldn’t find a ride.”

Details are still sketchy, but police said there was an argument between McRoyal and at least four men. One of them opened fire, shooting McRoyal and another man in the arm. The suspects are still at-large.
