Mountain West Conference Preview: Colorado State

BOISE - After finishing a dismal 3-9 last season, the Colorado State football team believes they have a chance to surprise some people this fall.

"We've got a lot of experience coming back, probably the most since I've been the head coach," said Rams head coach Steve Fairchild.

This season, Fairchild figures to have six to seven starters returning on both sides of the ball, plus Pete Thomas returns undercenter after starting as a freshman in 2010.

That experience seems to have caught the eye of the media as well.  In the MWC preseason media poll, the Rams have been slatted to finished fifth.

With Boise State jointing the MWC this season, Colorado State will be their first test in their new conference.  The Broncos travel to play the Rams on October 15 in Fort Collins.

Akey Rips Bronocs

LAS VEGAS, NV - Even though the Idaho and Boise State football teams are not scheduled to play this season, the war of words wages on.

At the Western Athletic Conference media days on Thursday, Vandal head coach Robb Akey could not resist from taking a few jabs at the Broncos.

"They are like the guys down in (Boise)," said Akey when asked how he felt about having to play BYU on the road.  "They do not want to come to our place, they just want us to come to their place."

If that was not enough, Akey then turned his attention towards the Mountain West Conference, stating it is not any better than the WAC.

"BYU, they are a Mountain West team.  The Mountain West and the WAC are the same," said Akey.

The coach then went on to suggest the Broncos' move to the MWC, was not what they hyped it up to be.

"I do not want to be the WAC champion because those guys are gone.  I do not look at it that way.  Because Boise has gone off to the SEC, right?  That is where they pictured themselves," said Akey.

Still, with Fresno State, Hawaii and Nevada all set to follow Boise State to the MWC, Akey could not help but sound concerned about the future of the conference.

"We have some work to do as a conference."
