Boise State lands quarterback transfer from Kansas

BOISE - The Boise State football program added a quarterback transfer from a Power 5 conference on Thursday.

Former Kansas quarterback Montell Cozart made waves when he revealed his decision on Twitter.

"Grateful to announce today that I will be committing to Boise State University," he tweeted.

Cozart appeared in 27 games - including 18 starts - for the Jayhawks over the last four years. He played as a true freshman in 2013 and started seven games as a sophomore in 2014. He then rolled into his junior campaign as the No. 1 quarterback on the Jayhawks depth chart, but saw his season come to an end after just four games due to an injury.

Cozart returned to the field for the Jayhawks in 2016, and was recognized as a team leader. He was named a team captain and started seven games. Cozart threw for a team-best 1,075 yards as a redshirt junior, but he tossed just seven touchdown compared to nine interceptions.

One of his strongest attributes is his mobility. Cozart rushed for 481 yards and two touchdowns on 191 career carries.

It was all the way back in February that Cozart announced he had decided to transfer.

"The past four years of my life at the University of Kansas has truly been a blessing. On and off the field, it has molded me into the man that I have become," tweeted Cozart in a heart-felt goodbye. "I have met some of my best friends here at Kansas and you are my brothers, I mean that with all of my heart.

"I want to announced that I intend to transfer from the University of Kansas," he continued. "It was a tough decision that brought a lot of prayer, sleepless nights, and meaningful talks with my family."

The addition of Cozart adds some much needed depth at the position for Boise State. After former Bronco quarterback Rathan Ricedorff left the team last month, only two quarterbacks remained on the roster - junior starter Brett Rypien and redshirt freshman Jake Constantine.

Boise State is also set to add freshman quarterback Chase Cord when the 2017 recruiting class arrives on campus in June.

Cozart - who has one year of eligibility remaining - is a graduate transfer, which means he is immediately eligible to play for the Broncos. He was granted a medical redshirt after he was limited to just four games due to injury in 2015.
