Jay Ajayi holds football camp in Boise

Jay Ajayi holds football camp on the Blue.

Former Boise State star running back Jay Ajayi returned to Boise Friday, holding his one-day youth football camp at Albertsons Stadium.

"I'm excited man, I used to be out here playing on this field and now I'm coaching kids to try and teach them skills," said Ajayi. "I remember as a kid going to camps such as these and it helped grow my love for the game and hopefully I can grow their love for the game as well."

The current Miami Dolphin had a breakout 2nd season in the NFL last year, rushing for 1,272 yards and eight touchdowns on the way to earning an NFL Pro Bowl selection.

"Definitely had a great season and I'm excited about that, to be able to get recognition for last year was cool and I was very humbled by those things." said Ajayi.

The former Bronco capped off a fantastic career at Boise State by earning 2nd team All-America honors during the Broncos' 2014 season. A Doak Walker award semifinalist that season, Ajayi rushed for 1,823 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns.

He also produced 50 catches for 535 receiving yards, helping lead Boise State to a Fiesta Bowl win against Arizona.

His 2014 season, he became the only player in FBS history to accumulate 1,800 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in a single season

He was selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins, rushing for 187 yards his rookie year before breaking out last season. The former Bronco joins former Boise State running backs Doug Martin (Tampa Bay) and Jeremy McNichols (Tampa Bay) in an effort to make Boise State become “RBU” in NFL circles.

"It's exciting to see we are starting to get some guys out here.  It's going to be exciting seeing Doug back out here this season, and having Jeremy (McNichols) out there with him now, I feel like those two are going to work great together," said Ajayi.

Despite the tremendous success this past season in helping Miami earn a playoff berth, he knows it’s now time to focus on building upon his fantastic 2016 season

"Last year was last year and I'm really excited for this upcoming year and this season to showcase some more things out there," said Ajayi.

The success at the professional level certainly hasn’t stopped him from returning frequently to Boise to give back to a community that means so much to him.

"I'm trying to show them that they can have fun, and enjoy themselves out here, and try and chase their dreams, maybe it's football, maybe it's something else, but being out here and having fun, that's what it's all about," said Ajayi.

Other highlights from our interview with Jay Ajayi:

- On his burgeoning fame and popularity around the country and a highlight this off-season:

"I got to go to an Andrea Bocelli concert in Miami and meet him and that was pretty cool, because he has one of the greatest voices in the world and it was cool to hear him up close in person, that was a great experience for me," said Ajayi.

- His thoughts on the new Boise State football uniforms unveiled this week:

"I like those, the orange unis as well, I thought those were sweet.  I like how they kind of switched up the swag there. Hopefully they can still pull out the black uniforms somehow, someway on a little surprise game or something," said Ajayi.
