Fewer travel packages sold for this year's Boise State opener

BOISE -- Football season is right around the corner.

We are less than two weeks away from the first Bronco game of the year. The team and the fans are gearing up for Coach Harsin's first season, which opens August 28 in Atlanta versus the Ole Miss Rebels.

This is not the first time the Broncos have faced off against an SEC opponent in the Georgia Dome.

Coach Peterson and the Broncos took on the Georgia Bulldogs just a few years ago in Atlanta and won.

"Obviously we're going to be severely outnumbered, I don't think there's any question there," said Bob Harmon of Harmon Travel in Boise. "And as was the case in Seattle, as was the case in Michigan, whenever we go to their turf we're going to be severely outnumbered."

Bob Harmon and Harmon travel have been helping Bronco fans plan their football travel for years.

"Barring any bowl game, the opening game would be the most popular of any season, usually," he said.

Though the opener is typically popular, Harmon said that this year's game was not as popular as openers in the past, like last year's Washington game. Although Harmon Travel completely sold out of their season opener travel packages, the amount of inquiries was lower than in previous years, and they did not sell as quickly.

"For Atlanta, we had several packages for flying down to Atlanta, staying a couple of nights, and going to the game and coming back," said Harmon. We had a longer trip for those interested in touring the South while they're gone that far across the country."

But, Harmon said the location is only one reason this game might not be as well attended as other season openers.

"The distance certainly factors into people's concerns and costs and things of that sort," he said. "But I don't believe that the distance was the major drawback this time around. I really think the Thursday setting, as opposed to the normal Labor Day weekend timing, probably hindered most people's ability to take the time off and go that far."
