Broncos move up 1 spot to No. 13 in both polls

BOISE - After a nail-biter of a win on Thursday night, the undefeated Boise State football team was rewarded on Sunday by moving up one spot to No. 13 in both the AP Top 25 and the Amway Coaches Poll.

The Broncos (7-0, 3-0 Mountain West) have been steadily climbing the polls since they entered the rankings last month.

Thursday night's game against BYU was a wild one. The Broncos turned the ball over five times, including two interceptions returned for touchdowns. But thanks to stout defense and big numbers by quarterback Brett Rypien, Boise State was able to hold on for a 28-27 win.

The team got some help in their quest for a New Years Six bowl this week when Houston (6-2, 3-2 American Athletic) was blown out 38-16 by conference foe SMU on Saturday.

The Cougars had been ranked No. 11 in both polls, but after the loss dropped out of the AP poll completely and are now ranked No. 24 in the coaches poll.

The highest-ranked conference champion from the Group of Five gets an automatic bid to one of the New Year's Six bowls. At this point, Boise State is in the driver's seat, and will get the bid if it wins out.

The Broncos travel to Laramie, Wyoming on Saturday to face a Cowboys team (5-2, 3-0 Mountain West) that has won three straight against conference opponents.
