BOISE - Boise State is no longer a candidate for Big 12 conference expansion, the university confirmed on Thursday.
In a statement, Boise State president Bob Kustra said the university provided the required information to begin the process of expansion talks, but "the conversations didn't get far enough to spark a deep analysis on what the partnership could have meant to either Boise State or the Big 12."
Kustra went on to say that school officials remain confident in the opportunities provided by the Mountain West Conference.
On Aug. 1, Boise State sent Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby a letter along with a 24-page document that highlights the university's accomplishments.
After an initial conversation, Kustra sent an additional letter "that highlights the unique trajectory" of the school and it's athletic programs. That second letter can be found here.
At least 18 teams were under consideration after the Big 12 announced that it would expand from its current 10 teams.
Multiple media outlets including ESPN and CBS Sports are reporting that the conference cut several teams and have narrowed their list to around 12 teams.
Mountain West teams Air Force and Colorado State are still in the running, according to ESPN. Other teams in consideration are BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, UConn, Houston, Rice, South Florida, SMU, Temple, and Tulane.
The candidates other than Boise State that did not make the cut are Arkansas State, East Carolina, New Mexico, Northern Illinois, San Diego State and UNLV, ESPN reported.
Boise State President Bob Kustra's statement from Thursday, Sept. 1:
We will always explore opportunities to put our university and our students in the best position for success. In this case, we believe we provided the necessary information for the beginning stages of the process, but the conversations didn’t get far enough to spark a deep analysis on what the partnership could have meant to either Boise State or the Big 12. We remain confident that our membership in the Mountain West Conference provides tremendous opportunities for our student-athletes in all sports. We wish the best to the Big 12 as they move forward.
