Boise State jumps Western Michigan in playoff rankings

BOISE - The Boise State football team just cleared one hurdle in their quest to make it to a New Years Six bowl game.

The Broncos moved up two spots to No. 20 in the College Football Playoff Rankings, released Tuesday night, jumping over No. 21 Western Michigan, which did not move in the all-important poll.

Boise State and WMU are the two Group of Five teams represented in the poll, which determines placement in the biggest bowl games. The top-ranked Group of Five conference champion gets an automatic bid to one of the New Years Six bowl games.

Western Michigan is currently one of two unbeaten teams in the FBS - the other is Alabama - but they have not moved very far up the polls due to their weak strength of schedule.

Boise State, on the other hand, is getting a boost from Washington State, which it beat in Week 2, and has since gone undefeated. The Cougars are currently sitting in first place in the Pac-12 North and are ranked No. 22 in the playoff rankings.

The Broncos still have more hurdles to clear if they hope to make a New Years bowl. First, they have to win the rest of their conference games, including the conference title. But because of their loss to Wyoming two weeks ago, Boise State will need the Cowboys to lose once more before the season is over. Wyoming lost to UNLV last weekend, creating a three-way tie of 5-1 Mountain Division teams (Wyoming, Boise State and New Mexico).

The Broncos hold the tie-breaker over New Mexico, and Wyoming has the tie-breaker over Boise State. If the Broncos win out and  Wyoming loses one of its final two games - this week against San Diego State or next week against New Mexico - Boise State is in the championship game and will face the Aztecs, who have already claimed the West Division of the Mountain West.

In short, Boise State fans should be rooting for San Diego State on Saturday.

The Broncos face UNLV at home on Friday, and will travel to Colorado Springs to face Air Force in the regular season finale on Nov. 25.
