Boise State fall scrimmage: Defense begins with a bang

BOISE -- Boise State senior defensive end Beau Martin sat down almost eager to answer questions Friday night.

"We've been working relentlessly," Martin said with a smile. "I was impressed this the defensive effort."

The Broncos held their final scrimmage of fall camp on Friday at Albertsons Stadium. The event, which was open to the public, was the last time for fans to see Boise State in action before the season opener on Aug. 28.

From the get-go, the defense set the tone. Cornerback Jonathan Moxey and safety Chanceller James - who was playing the nickel position at the time - both delivered big hits that fired up people in the stands and on the field.

"You love that," Martin explained. "Especially on defense. Big plays. Guys talking. The more energy, the better on the defensive side of the ball."

"When something like that happens, you're going to fired up the guys around you and other guys are going to want to top that," he added.

Quarterback Grant Hedrick, Ryan Finley and even Tommy Stuart - who only had three attempts - where successful driving the ball down the field. The offense was able to accomplish what they set out to do though as well.

"That was kind of our focus," said Hedrick. "Getting more vertical throws in and less lateral. We're trying to push the ball down field and I think we did a pretty good job of that."

The Broncos return to the practice field on Saturday before closing out fall camp on Sunday.

Players will get Monday off, then the in-season practice schedule begins on Tuesday as Boise State begins to shift their focus to their season opening opponent, Ole Miss.
