BOISE - Playing their 2012 home opener, the Boise Hawks came up short against the Eugene Emeralds on Wednesday night before a sellout crowd of 3,442 fans at Memorial Stadium.
The Emeralds pushed across all seven of their runs with two outs, as they opened a 14-game road trip with a 7-4 victory over the Hawks.
With the scored tied at three in the top of the seventh, a Corey Adamson two-run single was followed by a Chris Burke RBI single to give Eugene a 6-3 advantage.
Boise closed the gap in the eighth when they got a run back on an RBI single by Marco Hernadez. They then had a chance for more when Jeimer Candelario came to the plate with runners on first and third and only one out in the inning, but Candelario grounded into a double play to end the threat.
Shawon Dunston Jr., Xavier Batista and Candelario each had two hits in the contest for Boise, who falls to 1-5 on the season.
Game 2 of the series is Thursday at 7:15 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
NOTES - The Hawks had a season-high 10 hits in the loss, but also surrendered a season-high 16 hits to Eugene...Candelario hit his first homerun since join the Boise Hawks...Gioskar Amaya had an RBI triple in the fourth, his league-leading second triple of the season...the Hawks made five roster moves prior to the game, as catcher Justin Marra was sent to the Arizona Rookie League, while pitcher Joe Zeller was sent to Boise from Advanced-A Daytona, along with three 2012 Draft Picks - catchers Lance Rymel (28th Round, Rogers State) and Chadd Krist (9th Round, Cal), and infielder Stephen Bruno (7th Round, Virginia)...Krist had his first professional hit with a single in the third.
