BOISE -- It is championship week in high school football.
This Friday, the two best teams in the state, Eagle and Capital, meet for the 5A state title!
Let's talk about Capital first.
The Eagles are undefeated, and have blown through every opponent this year.
They have the top defense in the state, led by Boise State commit Kyle Sosnowski, and are heavy favorites to beat the Mustangs.
However, while confident, Capital isn't paying any attention to the enormous hype surrounding their program.
"We just try to look past that. We come out to practice every week, try to do the same thing, get better every day, and give our opponents no hope," said Jeremy Powers, Capital quarterback.
"We're all about us. And so the outside world, what they're saying and thinking, we try to block that out. And if we take care of ourselves, we tell our kids good things will happen. They've done a great job of doing that," said Todd Simis, Capital head football coach.
Eagle, meanwhile is no chopped liver.
The Mustangs have won 10 in a row, and boast a high-powered offense led by Nevada-bound Taylor Kelly.
They know they're underdogs, and they're OK with that.
"Everyone in the city expects Capital to win this game, and I suspect if I was betting money, I'd bet on them too... I get that. But, at the same token, we have a lot of confidence and belief in ourselves. So, all of that just makes it exciting for us," said Paul Peterson, Eagle head football coach.
"We're treating it obviously like it's a big game, but we really want to treat it like any other week. We just really want to prepare really hard, and go out there, and play our best," said Jordan Thompson, Eagle wide receiver.
These two teams are also the past two state runner-ups, so both squads are very hungry for the gold!
Capital and Eagle kickoff at 7 p.m. at Bronco Stadium on Friday for the 5A state title.
Those aren't the only southern Idaho teams playing for a state title this weekend.
All the other championship games are at Holt Arena in Pocatello.
Fruitland is appearing in its 4th-straight 3A Championship game. They're up against Shelley at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
In the 2A, Parma looks for their 2nd-straight Championship. They face Declo at 5 p.m.
More local teams in the 1A. Oakley plays Prairie at 1 p.m. on Saturday for the 1AD1 title.
And, Salmon River plays Mackay for the 1AD2 state championship at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
