MOSCOW - The Idaho football team released their spring practice schedule on Thursday.
The first of 15 allotted sessions will begin on March 22 at 3:00 p.m. and conclude with the Silver and Gold game on April 20 at 6:00 p.m.
This will be the first opportunity for new offensive coordinator Jason Gesser to try and improve an offensive that ranked 107th in the NCAA last season in points scored, average just 20.3 a contest.
Gesser replaces former offensive coordinator Steve Axman, who retired in the offseason. Head coach Robb Akey believes the former Washington State quarterback will provide his offensive with a shot in the arm.
"He's very capable, he's a good coach. He knows exactly what we want done. He's played it at a high level - both in college and at a professional level," said Akey about Gesser. "I'm going to count on Jason to pull it all together and to be aggressive in the course of a ballgame."
The top priority for coach Akey and Gesser this spring will be finding a starting quarterback. Last season, junior-to-be Taylor Davis started three games, but posted poor numbers. Davis completed just 28-of-62 passes for 234 yards, to go along with one touchdown and four interceptions. Redshirt junior Dominique Blackman figures to enter the mix and after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. The 6'5" 274-pound left-hander originally committed to play at the University of Washington out of high school, but ended up attending Los Angeles Harbor College. After transferring to Old Dominion in the fall of 2010, Blackman moved to Moscow in the spring of 2011.
Other key returners for the Vandals are junior All-WAC tight end Michael LaGrone, wide receivers Justin Veltung and Mike Scott, along with runningback Ryan Bass.
