BOISE -- The Boise State University football team is ranked No. 24 in the Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll.
The Broncos received 212 points in the poll. It is their lowest preseason ranking in the past four seasons. Boise State started the 2009 season at No. 14, the 2010 season at No. 9 and last year at No. 5.
Southern California is ranked No. 1 after two years of NCAA sanctions that kept the Trojans out of bowl games. USC earned the top spot in the preseason college football poll for the seventh time and the first time in five seasons, edging out No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 LSU.
The Trojans received 25 of a possible 60 first-place votes from a media panel in a close vote. Defending national champion Alabama had 17 first-place votes and LSU got 16 first-place votes.
Oklahoma was fourth with a single first-place vote and Oregon was fifth.
Boise State’s opening opponent Michigan State received 742 points and is No. 13 in the preseason poll. The Broncos travel to East Lansing, Michigan on Aug. 31 (Friday) to face the Spartans. Kickoff is 6 p.m. MT and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN.
Earlier this month the Broncos were ranked No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches preseason poll.
The Broncos are the only non-Bowl Championship Series team in the top 25.
