SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Former Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier is scheduled to interview Monday for the vacant position at San Jose State, according to sources.
Bleymaier is believed to have the backing of SJSU alum Dick Vermeil. (Bleymaier played football for Vermeil at UCLA in the mid-1970s.)
"At this point, he's the only candidate. If it doesn't work, they'll have to go to a Plan B," a source said.
Bleymaier oversaw the Broncos athletic department for nearly 30 years but was fired last summer after the NCAA determined the school had committed violations in numerous sports, including football, and lacked adequate institutional control.
The Spartans' vacancy was created last month when Tom Bowen accepted a similar position at Memphis. Marie Tuite is the interim A.D.
