BOISE -- The Chicago Cubs today announced that their 2011 first round draft pick will be joining the Boise Hawks.
Shortsop Javier Baez was the 9th overall draft pick from this year’s Major League Baseball Amateur draft.
Baez is a six-foot, 180-pound right-hander out of Arlington Country Day High School in Jacksonville, Florida.
The 18-year-old is coming to the Hawks from Mesa, Arizona after signing with the Cubs this month.
The Boise Hawks also announced several other changes to their roster.
CF Pin-Chieh Chen and RHP Yao-Lin Wang returned to Taiwan to play for the national team there, and C Mario Mercedes was sent up to the triple-A Iowa Cubs.
Joining the team will be right-handed pitchers Michael Jensen, James Pugliese, and Tony Zych. All three are draft picks from this season and are coming up from Mesa.
Zych is 6-3, 190 lbs. and the fourth round pick out of the University of Louisville. Pugliese is an 18th rounder from Mercer County Community College in New Jersey, also 6-3, but 195 lbs. Jensen is 6-1, 185 lbs. and is the Cubs 26th round draft pick out of Hartnell Community College in California. OF Kyung-Min Na is also rejoining the team from Mesa.
