BOISE-- Former Boise State defensive end Ryan Winterswyk has decided to retire from football. Winterswyk told KTVB sports on Tuesday that he made up his mind to walk away from the game while he was healthy and able. He has had several different injuries in the past, but did not base his retirement on any one specific injury.
Winterswyk played one year with the Atlanta Falcons, mostly on the team's practice squad. He missed part of the season with a fractured ankle.
A cornerstone of the Boise State defense in his college career, Winterswyk was a three-time All-WAC defensive selection.
He says that he plans to stay in Boise for a while with his fiance.
