HONOLULU -- The Boise State football team conducted their first practice in Hawai'i on Friday and two prominent names were absent.
Senior quarterback Joe Southwick and redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Patti were both suspended for "team violations."
Southwick started the first seven games of the season for Boise State before he broke his ankle against Nevada on Oct. 19. He returned to action in the final game of the regular season against New Mexico and led the team on a scoring drive on their opening series. Junior quarterback Grant Hedrick then came on and finished out the game as Boise State won, 45-17.
Patti appeared in six games this fall and completed 8 of 11 passes for 63 yards.
As far as if or how this will impact their playing time in the bowl game Tuesday, no additional information was provided beyond the suspension from Friday’s practice.
Interim head coach Bob Gregory announced that junior runningback Derrick Thomas was suspended and would not travel with the team to Hawaii for the game on Tuesday.
The Broncos will take the field against Oregon State on Tuesday, Dec. 24 in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl. Boise State has won their last four postseason football games.
