EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey -- A Meridian middle school activities director scored his 15 minutes of fame on the first day of the 2012 NFL Season.

The reason: he served as a back-up referee for the highly anticipated Dallas Cowboys / New York Giants game on Wednesday.

Jim Core teaches 8th grade geography at Sawtooth Middle School. He also serves as the school's activities director. The experienced official also has eight years of collegiate refereeing experience, along with AF-2 refereeing experience with the Boise Burn.

Core was tapped to serve as a backup referee in the Giants / Cowboys game due to an NFL referee contract dispute.

"Mr. Core," as his students call him, appeared on the field less than a minute into the game. Core helped the game's referee staff dole-out a total of 17 penalties, of which 13 went to Dallas.

The Cowboys would go on to win the game 24 to 17, defeating the defending world champion Giants.
