BOISE-- Team Serbia, led by world No. 1 player Novak Djokovic, defeated Team USA in the Davis Cup quarterfinals, 3-1, on Sunday to advance in the tournament.

Serbia led the quarterfinals, 2-1, going into the final two singles matches in the best-of-five tournament, and secured the win when Djokovic defeated Sam Querrey, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-0.

It wasn't easy for Djokovic early on, as he suffered an ankle injury early in the first set. Djokovic appeared to have rolled his right ankle, and knelt down on the court following the injury. A timeout was called, and Djokovic was given attention on his bench. After brief treatment, Djokovic was able to return to competition.

“Obviously it's very strong emotion when you play for your country,” Djokovic said.  “I guess that's the biggest reason why I kept playing.  Injuries are a part of sport, and you try to avoid as much as you can as an athlete.”

Seemingly hampered by the injured ankle, Djokovic was broken in the sixth game of the set, but managed to battle back and score a break of his own later in the set and serve for the win.

Querrey fought back in the second set, and forced a tiebreak that he eventually won.

That seemed to be the motivation Djokovic needed, as he played through his injury and won set three easily, 6-1.

With all of the momentum on his side, Djokovic scored three break points in the fourth set, and cruised to a six-game victory to win the match.

“I'm very happy, very emotional about the win today,” Djokovic said. “It meant a lot to me personally and the whole team and the nation, and we are very glad to be in semifinals again.”

The loss ends Team USA's run in the Davis Cup, while Serbia advances to face Canada in the semifinals.
