How nervous was Meridian native Kyle Brotzman in the Fiesta Bowl before the fake punt?
"I think I was more nervous for the opening kickoff than I was for that throw."
In the fourth quarter with the game on the line Brotzman didn't look nervous. He caught the snap and hit Capital High grad Kyle Efaw in stride to get the Broncos a first down on a drive that would lead to the go ahead touchdown. Brotzman never really sweated having to make a big play in that situation.
"When we did finally decide to do it was on the whole time unless JC [Percy] thought there was nothing we could do," said Brotzman. "You know the thoughts were going through my head were that we had been practicing it for the last three years so it wasn't too big."
It wasn't big, it was huge. Brotzman who had one of his more trying seasons in 2009 was now known as a hero.
Like the hook and ladder, the statue of liberty, and now the fake punt will forever live in Bronco football lore.
